Inauguration of the new building of boilers and the biomasa forests heat’s network of Setcases
This Saturday the inauguration of the new biomass boiler building and the Setcases forest biomass heat network took place. The event was attended by Albert Piñeira, Vice President and Deputy of Culture of the Diputació de Girona; Carlos Fernández, mayor of Setcases, and Joan Manso, president of the Ripollès County Council.
The building and the heat network have been funded by the Diputació de Girona and the Setcases Town Council. The building had a cost of 185,063.65 euros and the heat network of 179,869.69 euros. The installation will provide heating and sanitary hot water to three buildings: the building where the town hall and the municipal office are located, the building of the study hall and the building that will host the future Interpretation Center From the Parc Natural de les Capçaleres del Ter and the Freser.
The action will mean, every year, a renewable energy production of 82,385 kWh, an energy saving of 4,119 kWh and some 23 t CO2 emissions saved.
The PAES of Setcases
The action is framed in the implementation of the PAES (Plan of Action for Sustainable Energy) of Setcases that consists of twenty actions that suppose a reduction of 825 t of CO2 by the year 2020 and equivalent to a 26, 24% of emissions in 2005. The main objective is to reduce CO2 emissions generated by the consumption of energy in buildings and municipal facilities, municipal waste management, tertiary and residential sector, public lighting, municipal fleets and vehicles.
Forest biomass
It is a resource highly available in our territory and with great management potential. Girona is a land of forests; More than half of its surface is covered by dense forests (some 317,771 hectares) that present an annual growth of almost 850,000 m3 of biomass. Today, forestry exploitation accounts for only 20% of the surface area that is occupied by our territory, which implies a rapid abandonment of forest management and a significant increase in the risk of forest fires.
Strategy «Europe 2020»
In this sense, the Diputació de Girona works to put its grain of sand in the incentive of initiatives aimed at energy efficiency and the installation of renewable energies to which municipalities can be accommodated with the objective of ‘Making modern energy renewable, accessible, reliable, clean, and allowing us to dynamise the local green economy. This is absolutely necessary to have a resilient and competitive economy, but also to combat and mitigate the consequences of climate change and energy poverty.
With these and other actions undertaken by the Girona municipalities, the commitment to reduce emissions in more than 20% by 2020, established by the “Europe 2020” strategy will be fulfilled. It should also be noted that municipal finances can be improved thanks to the reduction of energy costs generated.
