The “Beenergi” programme of the Girona Provincial Council, between the three nominees for the EU Sustainable Energy Week Award

The program of energy efficiency and saving of the Girona Provincial Council, “Beenergi” has been chosen by the European Union as one of three finalists competing for the EU Sustainable Energy Award in the category of public sector. The award distinguishes the best community initiative in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy in order to highlight new ways to shape the energy future of Europe. The Girona’s program aims to won the prize and stay ahead of two other finalists: the Romanian thermal rehabilitation program of Bucharest and the Swedish program “Celsius” about knowledge exchange on heating and cooling. The winner will be announced on 20th June during the Sustainable Energy Week that will take place in Brussels from 19 to 25 May.

“Beenergi” opts to win the prize for the best initiative from the public sector but not the only category awarded on June 20 because also awarded three categories: companies, consumers and energy islands. “Beenergi” a successful project

With its two years of existence, “Beenergi” has promoted the mobilization of investments in energy efficiency and savings for more than seventy municipalities of Girona. Innovative measures such as grouped tendering allowed to simplify administrative procedures and make funding sustainable investments even those of the smallest municipalities. Thanks to these actions in public lighting and municipal buildings a saving of 5,569 tons of CO2 emissions per year and 1.5 M € have been achieved in the region. The program also devotes efforts to the training of local SMEs relating to the installation and maintenance of systems and promoting sustainable energy use and management of local biomass to reduce the risk of forest fires and create jobs green.


The European Week of Sustainable Energy

The European Commission in Brussels organizes every year the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), an event that brings together public authorities, private companies, NGOs and consumers around the promotion of energy saving initiatives and the transition to a clean energy model, secure and efficient.

Being a finalist allows the “Beenergi” members to meet with decision-makers and public interest groups during EUSEW, and the shooting a short film as a summary of the project that will be accessible on the EUSEW website. This will give great visibility to the work carried out by the program of the Council of Girona a wide audience in a continental level; is a key aspect for the programme as innovative organizational and financial schemes promoted from “Beenergi” want to play other territories concerned to mobilize sustainable energy investments.
